Three suspects tied to attack of Yuma police officers appear in court

Three suspects tied to the attack of two Yuma police officers were back in court where they learned the formal charges filed against them.

Manuel Silvas, his mother Christina Silvas and a third individual, Christopher Yanez, appeared in Justice Court Wednesday afternoon to have their formal charges be read.

Both Manuel and Christina Silvas are accused of yelling and throwing rocks at neighbors near a local trailer park according to a police report.

Manuel was accused of being physically combative against officers, according to a report read at his last hearing.

Both Manuel and Yanez appeared in custody on Wednesday.

Manuel appeared first of the three and was seen shaking his head as the judge read his charges.

“Two charges have been filed against you. After taking the opportunity to review the police report submitted by your arresting officer, [they] are for aggravated assault both allegedly involving two officers with Yuma Police Department, both offenses listed as classified felonies,” the judge said.

After reviewing Manuel’s information, the judge set a bond amount.

“With respect to bond, [the] bond will be set a secured bond set in the amount of $10,000 it is indicated that it is likely that bond is going to be posted,” judge Stewart said.

His mother, Christina Silvas, appeared after being released from custody last Friday.

During her son’s hearing, she pleaded with the judge to release him saying, “He’s just a good kid caught in a bad situation.”

Christina faces two charges of aggravated assault involving Yuma Police Department, both class five felonies.

Christopher Yanez was arrested on the 27th for striking and kicking officers, according to Yuma police.

“Your charges have been filed by the state prosecutor’s office after they reviewed the report submitted by your arresting officer each of those offenses allegedly occurred on or about the 27th day of December, count one is resisting arrest, a class six felony, count two and count three aggravated assault involving officers of the Yuma Police Department, both offenses listed as class five felonies,” the judge said.

Yanez’ bond was set at $15,000.

No victims were present in the courthouse for any of the cases.
