Police: 9 hurt after suspected red-light runner causes crash

Nine people were transported to the hospital after a head-on collision in Yuma on New Year’s Eve.

It happened about 10:30 p.m. in the intersection of 8th Street and Avenue A.

According to Yuma Police, the driver of a Nissan Altima was driving northbound on Avenue A at a high rate of speed and ran a red light at 8th Street, crashing into a Mitsubishi sedan.

Officers said nine occupants from both vehicles were transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Traffic was restricted for about three hours, and alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash, police said.

Police are still investigating.
