“Today I’m announcing that the 2018 Matador Football season, which we just completed this past Saturday at the El Toro Bowl, will be the final season for Arizona Western College,” said Dr. Daniel P. Corr, President of AWC.
He claimed the reason the program is going away is that they could not find a way to sustain the program.
“Both the departure of the Maricopa and Pima CC teams, as well as the sheer difficulty we faced in securing a 2019 schedule without significant new travel dollars made this the final outcome,” said Dr. Corr.
Dr. Corr did add that football players on scholarship who want to continue to attend AWC will be able to.
The Matador’s long-time coach Tom Minnick announced Wednesday he had taken another position at Garden City in Kansas City.
He said one of the reasons he was leaving was the uncertainty surrounding the future of the program.
The Matadors began their football program in 1964.
