Two norteno musicians killed in northern Mexico
Mexico’s northern border state of Tamaulipas is offering a $100,000 reward for information on the killing of two young members of a norteno music band.
The band Nortenos del Rio Bravo said Sunday that bass player Cuitlahuac Ruiz and accordion player Elias Hernandez were found murdered. They had been reported kidnapped over the weekend.
They were from Rio Bravo, near Reynosa, Tamaulipas, a city ravaged by drug cartel violence.
Several musicians have been killed in Mexico, and the motives often remain murky. But experts say cartel gunmen sometimes kill musicians to enforce extortion demands, express displeasure with lyrics or in revenge for personal affronts.
