Local reaction to Sinema Win
The outcome in Arizona had been too close to call for nearly a week, but it was finally announced Monday night that representative Kyrsten Sinema, a democrat came out victorious in the race for a senate seat in Arizona.
Sinema will take the seat being left by Jeff Flake, a republican who is leaving the senate after repeated clashes with our president.
Sinema’s victory guarantees the Democrats at least 47 senate seats. As of now Republicans control 51 seats, with two still undecided: one in Florida, where there is a recount and another in Mississippi, where there is a runoff.
This victory by Sinema is a major shift for the state of Arizona. She is not only the first female to represent Arizona as a U.S S enator, but she is also the first openly bi-sexual candidate to be elected. She became the first Democrat Arizona has elected to the Senate in 30 years.
Here is what two locals had to say about the recent news of her win.
“I like how she was more bi-partisan. Instead of just being an alt-left or an alt-right, I think she is going to bring everyone to the table,” said Ellie Sawyer, a Yuma local.
“I am sorry to see that she won after she called our state deplorable and also I think she’s done some things in the past that I don’t agree with,” said Natalie Shelly, a Yuma local.
