Over 50 sheep found dead in canal

Authorities are investigating the discovery of over 50 sheep found dead or injured at the Main Canal on East County 13th Street and South Avenue 26 E in Wellton Friday.

According to the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the Main Canal in Wellton where the reporting party located over 100 sheep, who were grazing in the area of South Avenue 27 E when they came out of containment. Sheriff officials stated that over 50 sheep were either dead or injured in the canal.

The owner of the sheep was contacted by authorities and is pending charges.

Department of Agriculture Animal Services and Livestock Officers from Phoenix will assist with the investigation. YCSO has notified the Yuma County Health Department who has contacted the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality.
