IVC students show support for DACA students through art

A paintbrush and an empty canvas. For Imperial Valley College student, Lizbeth Diaz, it’s a chance to express her support for undocumented students through painting.

The event, “Exploring Undocumented Narrative through Art” is part of community colleges statewide celebration working to bring awareness to hundreds of thousands of students who are in fear of deportation.

Diaz knows how important her education is. Especially since hundreds of thousands of undocumented students face the challenge of being deported.

“When you paint, you just feel like how free you are. How you can just do whatever you want. Undocumented students can’t do that. They can just go outside and walk without being afraid,” said Diaz.

Imperial Valley College is dedicated to providing a safe environment for all students.

Victor Torres, Imperial Valley College Dean of Student Affairs, said, “It’s very important to support those students. Obviously, we want to be inclusive here on our campus. Our campus is committed to supporting undocumented students and be able to address those needs as well.”

Last Wednesday, the Justice Department announced that it will soon ask the Supreme Court to rule whether the government can shut down the DACA Program. That ruling could come by next spring.
