Governor Doug Ducey visits The Yuma Community Food Bank

Governor Doug Ducey will be visiting several locations in Yuma on Thursday, October 4.

Gov. Ducey will be at the at the Hilton Garden Inn holding a discussion roundtable with local businesses, civic and non-profit leaders.

Gov. Ducey is also expected to visit the Yuma Community Food Bank in the afternoon. The last time the governor visited the food bank was three years ago and this is his fifth visit to the Yuma area.

Local non-profit leader raised their concerns on issues facing Yuma County, including retaining law enforcement and obtaining more funding for mental health programs.

“I’m really behind keeping our law enforcement, supporting them, sustaining them, so that we can get those years of experience we need when they’re dealing with these sensitive crimes,” said Diane Umphress who is the Executive Director of Amberly’s Place.

Governor showed his full support with Umphress’s comment.

“We do need these fine men and women in law enforcement and I’ve gone out my way to make sure that we honor and respect them,” said Gov. Doug Ducey.

Ducey also visited the Yuma Community bank to take a look at the damage Hurricane Rosa left behind. The food bank lost about 19-thousand pounds of food over the weekend, affecting locals in need that depend on that food. Governor Ducey’s plan is to minimize how many people rely on food from food banks across the state.

“We want to make it where people don’t need food from the food bank, if they have a good paying job and they don’t need the services of the food bank. But we have way too many places in Yuma county and in the state where people are in trouble or they’re vulnerable,” said Gov. Ducey.

Governor Ducey also said that he will be talking with the Department of Economic Security to see what funds are available for the food bank.
