American Red Cross makes downtown El Centro their new home

Local agencies, city, and state officials gathered to celebrate the American Red Cross’ new home in the downtown El Centro.

Even though their space is smaller than their last base of operations, their goal remains the same.

Imperial Valley Service Center Manager, Sylvia Preciado-Platero said , ” We are the Red Cross. It’s something we carry inside. Our operation is not managed by a building. It’s the mission. The mission hasn’t changed. The vision remains.”

The American Red Cross relies on the generosity of the community to continue working. “We receive no government funding. So it’s very important. It’s critical. To remain mobilized, to remain ready so that the trust can continue from our community,” said Preciado-Platero.

Residents can rest easy knowing that the Red Cross is ready to respond when disaster strikes. Mayor of El Centro Cheryl Viegas Walker said , ” I sleep better at night knowing that the Red Cross is there to respond at a moment’s notice. With their volunteers and all sorts of resources , they have that can deploy immediately to where they’re needed. It’s invaluable.”

Having local volunteers is vital to helping victims in the valley. “It’s absolutely essential to have people that understand what Imperial County’s needs are. What potential events could happen in Imperial County. You need to be aware of your surroundings, you need to be in tune with the community,” said Senator Ben Hueso.
