Driver dies after car plunges into ravine

A 70-year-old driver is dead after his car fell approximately 300 feet into a ravine early Wednesday morning.

The California Highway Patrol said Bruce Mallard, a Long Beach, Calif. resident, was traveling downhill in a blue 2004 Kia Spectra on eastbound Interstate 8, two miles east of In-Ko-Pah Park Road.

Mallard approached a left curve at an unknown speed and drove into the left dirt shoulder. He then tried to overcorrect the Kia but lost control of the vehicle causing the car to spin clockwise. The car overturned down the mountainside, flipping multiple times, and landed within a ravine about 300 feet below.

Mallard suffered multiple injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities said he was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the incident.

The incident remains under investigation.
