HSOY takes in more than three dozen surrendered pets

An additional three dozen furry friends are calling the Humane Society of Yuma home after being surrendered.

Two large surrender cases have affected HSOY in the last week.

One involving 16 dogs, two of which are just one-week-old.

The other case involves 18 cats. Four of those have since been euthanized because they didn’t come into the shelter healthy.

HSOY stressed that surrendering your pet is not always bad, however, they do have resources to prevent pet owners from turning over their pets.

“We still, as the organization, want to be the source to help these people, but there are different ways to go about it. Spaying and neutering is a huge component of it. Where if it’s starting to really get out of control. We have resources that can help people,” said Lana Shapiro.

HSOY also has programs for assistance feeding, vaccinating, and re-homing your pet.
