Former substance abuser educating youths on dangers of drug use

A former substance abuser who turned his life around is using his personal experience to help others who could be fighting drug addiction.

Gerardo Aguilar, who has been drug-free for the last three years, has partnered with the Imperial Valley LGBT Resource Center to fight the war on drugs among the Imperial County’s youth.

Aguilar hopes that sharing the dangers of what drugs can do to their mind and body, can prevent them from substance abuse.

“The people that didn’t make it is the reason why I do what I do today. Along with helping and educating those who may be on that wrong path,” said Aguilar.

Aguilar said that by being more open with their children, parents can begin that conversation if their children are using drugs.

One community leader said the youth has become an easy target for drug use.

Founder and CEO of IV LGBT Resource Center, Rosa Diaz said, “They’re at an age where they are easily influenced. And again, they’re also not mature enough to know that this their future.”

Parents need to be educated so they can seek the help their children need.

“If the parents aren’t educated on a substance and the child starts using a substance. The parents are not going to know how to reach out or connect that child of theirs with the right group, support group. That’s going to help the child,” Aguilar said.

Imperial Valley LGBT Resource Center hosts the drug prevention and education every Friday at 3 p.m.
