Inmate escapes work detail, at large

An inmate escaped from Imperial County Sheriff custody while working on a cleanup detail in the north area of Brawley along Highway 111 on Wednesday afternoon.

24-year-old Jacob Roman Mariscal has brown eyes, black hair, weighs about one-hundred-ninety pounds. He’s 5’11” tall. Mariscal is a Brawley resident. He has two distinctive tattoos on his face. One has the letters “ESB” and the other reads “Laura”.

He was in custody for probation violation on a two-year sentence for burglary. He had served six months on that sentence and was expected to receive a reduced sentence for working on the work detail. There were eight inmates and one supervisor working on Mariscal’s group when he escaped. ICSO said it’s customary to have just one supervisor for that many inmates.

ICSO said inmates who work on those crews are carefully selected and they are considered to be no threat to the community, they are considered low-risk inmates.

Lt. Jimmy Duran said, “There’s no indication that Mr. Mariscal is a danger to our community, if not, he would have never been placed in an inmate work crew. However, we do want to reach out to the community for further assistance; we do need assistance in locating Mr. Mariscal. We do have reason to believe that he’s still within the county.”

Duran said they don’t know why Mariscal walked away from the work detail, because doing so has only complicated his legal situation. He said, when Mariscal is recaptured, this escape might likely add time – maybe years – to his sentence.

The Sheriff’s Office is asking the public for help in locating Mariscal. Anyone with information on Mariscal’s whereabouts can contact the Sheriff’s Office directly at (442) 265-2021 or call 911 to report him.
