Locals weigh in on Jon Kyl appointment

Arizona Governor Doug Ducey appointed Senator Jon Kyl to finish Senator John McCain’s term Tuesday morning.

Republican Representative Tim Dunn expressed his feelings about Senator Kyl’s appointment.

“Senator Kyl is awesome for the Republican Party. He will continue to serve our Arizona well. I’m glad Governor Ducey picked him,” said Representative Dunn.

The Yuma County Democratic Party said that it is good that Ducey appointed someone who knows Arizona.

“I hope he follows Senator McCain, how he did it. Obviously, if he needs to vote on things that he votes for what’s best for the people, not for the President,” said Martin Porchas, Yuma County Democratic Party Chair.

Kyl served Arizona as U.S. Senator from 1995 to 2013.

Representative Dunn said that Kyl is also familiar with Yuma.

“Yes, we’ve had Senator Kyl out to the farm many times. He understands water. He understands Yuma agriculture. He understands the lettuce industry here, and so [sic] our exports. So yes, he’s well versed in Yuma agriculture. He’s been here over his whole career as a Senator,” said Representative Dunn.

Porchas said that Democrats will be pushing a candidate during election time that will have the qualities to really represent the people of Arizona.

“Someone that really represents the people of Arizona and not so much in line with what the President thinks. I think being [there] for the needs of Arizonans,” said Porchas.

Representative Dunn said Kyl would serve until at least the end of the second session of the 115th Congress.
