What’s in season at the grocery store?

In this week’s Home Grown we learn about a few items that are in season at the grocery store.

Raziel Valle, the Produce Manager at Sprouts explains what food items to look out for.

Yellow watermelons are in season through November.

Black Mission and Brown Turkey figs are in season through November.

Yellow Kiwis from New Zealand are in season now.

Hatch Chilies are in season now.

How to pick out produce that is ripe:

Look for the black webs on melons, these are “sugar crystals.” It means that the melon is sweeter than normal. With other fruits just make sure they are a little squishy but still firm.

With the green hatch chilies be sure they are green. Once they turn yellow or orange they are going bad.

Most melons and cantaloupes are going out of season right now.
