Humane Society of Imperial County wins national contest grandprize

The Humane Society of Imperial County is facing numerous problems including recent power outages due to faulty wiring.

Devon Apodaca, the executive director of the Humane Society of Imperial County said, “It’s a constant struggle and we’re constantly having to put out fires and band-aid things.”

The shelter also doesn’t have enough money to buy food and cleaning supplies for animals.

“It’s extremely frustrating you know when you don’t have the funding t do what you need to do,” said Apodaca.

But recently, they were announced as the grand prize winners in Tractor Supply Company’s Rescue Your Rescue contest where customers nominated their favorite shelter and the public casted votes.

The humane society plans on using the money to maintain the health of their animals.

“The $10,000 is going to you know veterinary costs that we’ve incurred over the last couple of months. So that way we can continue to help the animals,” said Apodaca.

Apodaca said they won because of the love and support from valley residents.

“I think people have seen our struggle you know, the community. This was a super easy and kind of fun way to get people involved and do their part in helping us get things done for the animals,” said Apodaca.

Jesse Zendejas, the store manager of the local Tractor Supply Company is glad that someone from his own backyard won.

“It’s a super extraordinary opportunity for something, for one of our own organizations to get recognized locally like that. Because we partner with them when we have community events here inside the store, and outside the store,” said Zendejas.

Tractor Supply Company will present the Humane Society of Imperial County with a check for the grand prize this Saturday at the El Centro location.
