Yuma man facing fewer charges prior to assaulting police officers

A Yuma man, who is in custody for allegedly assaulting two police officers, was seen in court Tuesday where he faced fewer charges prior to his arrest.

In May 2018, 41-year-old Ralph Sivyer was wanted for possession of a weapon by a prohibited person and prohibited weapon-manufacturing. It wasn’t until Yuma Police Department approached Sivyer in early June in a traffic stop when he assaulted two officers and took off with one of their handguns.

With a warrant out for his arrest, he was later stopped by a Border Patrol agent near a checkpoint in Dome Valley and was taken into custody.

On Tuesday, Judge Gregory Stewart said Sivyer’s charges from his first incident involving weapons had not been filed due to the County Attorney’s Office not receiving the police report for those charges.

Sivyer remains in custody and will be in court next week facing formal charges for his alleged attack against two Yuma police officers in June 2018.
