Somerton family filling financial void after father’s liver transplant

A Somerton family is working to make ends meet while their father is recovering from a liver transplant in Phoenix.

Six months ago Carlos Pompa, 50, was diagnosed with Cirrhosis.

“He went to the restroom and I think his pee was black. He told my mom and my mom took him to the hospital and that’s where they found out everything,” said Kimberly Cordova, Pompa’s daughter.

The diagnosis forced Pompa, who his family described as a hard worker, to stop working as an electrician and embark on a journey to recovery.

“It’s affecting us pretty bad because everything has to change from one day to another. Some of us had to like stop working to be over there. Everything had to change,” said Cordova.

Pompa must stay in Phoenix for three more months, leaving Cordova excited for the day her family can reunite.

“I want to see us back like how we were before, like always laughing, always going out and always being together. Not like right now, when we have to be really separate,” said Cordova.

From diagnosis to a liver transplant, Pompa’s family said he has been strong.

“He wants to keep living, that’s why he keeps trying with his health,” said Cordova.

The family has also realized the importance of organ donation.

“You save a lot of people’s lives, like my dad. He got his liver transplant. I’m really happy that person donated his organs because now my dad got his life saved,” said Cordova.

This year 159,327 people have received liver transplants in the U.S., according to The Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network.

The family plans to sell plates of food in the coming weeks to continue to fill the financial void and ensure their father can recover comfortably.

If you would like to help Carlos Pompa, you can donate to his

GoFundMe account.
