Law enforcement agencies prioritize active shooting drills
The Yuma County Sheriff’s Office has made training for an active shooter a priority since the Las Vegas and Parkland shootings occurred.
The Yuma Public Safety Training Facility recently hosted nine different law enforcement agencies over the course of four days.
Because active shootings can occur differently depending on the situation, authorities experienced various training drills.
Alfonso Zavala, Public Information Officer for the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office said, “This training is geared towards our law enforcement patrol officers that will respond to an active shooter course throughout the year.”
Indoor and outdoor drills were included to simulate any situation from apartment complexes, classrooms, and even dealing with domestic violence cases.
The course was also intended to be a way to train officers how to teach future officers the same drills.
According to Zavala, factors such as active shooters being televised as well as social media coverage on previous shootings is causing for the need for a more specific role for the training.
