Vehicle versus multiple pedestrians in popular desert area

Somerton Cocopah Fire Department responded to a vehicle versus multiple pedestrians accident in the desert area of south of County 19 and Avenue D on Sunday.

It happened on June 10, at 9:15 p.m. when a witness report said a pickup truck was driving at a high speed, and for unknown reasons, struck a parked truck where subjects were tailgating in an area used for racing.

Arriving EMS couldn’t get access to the accident in the desert area. A pickup truck took EMS with their equipment to the accident.

When paramedics arrived, they found a total of five patients, two critical and three stable but injured, and they were treated back at the staging area on County 19th, according to SCFD.

SCFD said a 25-year-old male was the most critical patient, with a severe avulsion injury to his thigh on his right leg.

A 24-year-old male suffered a broken left leg. A 20-year-old female was complaining of a leg pain, and a female in her twenties was complaining to pain in her lower back. A male in his twenties also complained of pain to his rib cage and minor difficulty breathing but refused treatment at the scene, according to SCFD.

SCFD said that all patients could have internal injuries due to being struck by a vehicle.

Yuma County Sheriff Office is investigating the accident.
