Suspects in Yuma alleyway shooting plead not guilty

The two suspects arrested after the shooting of a man and woman in Yuma pleaded not guilty to the crime in Yuma County Superior Court Monday.

Armando Montaño Jr., 26, faces charges of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault, and criminal damage.

The public defender representing Montaño requested Judge David M. Haws for a condition of release.

The second suspect, Daniel Muñoz, 33, was charged with attempted second-degree murder, aggravated assault, and criminal damage.

These charges stem from a shooting on May 23 in the area of the 2000 block of S. Avenue A at approximately 12:02 p.m., according to Yuma police.

An investigation revealed that later that day at around 1:30 p.m. one of the suspect vehicles was located in Somerton, Ariz. YPD’s Special Enforcement Team was deployed to the area of Somerton Avenue and Fulton Street to investigate the area.

Two two victims were taken to the Yuma Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. According to YPD there were three vehicles involved in the incident.

Authorities said that the victims did not return any shots and that the suspects and victims knew one another.

Muñoz and Montaño will be back in court July 11 at 8:30 a.m. for a case management conference.

Montaño’s release hearing is scheduled for June 19, at 10 a.m.
