Gas prices affecting locals

The rise of the price of gas has some feeling like their pockets are a little less full.

Eric Schaffer filled up his gas tank before heading to the Colorado River with his family, but said that the new trend has him thinking twice about the trips his family can take.

“Since they’ve gone up, we haven’t gone out as much. Usually we like to go out a few times during the week, now it’s just weekends. It’s almost like 100 bucks to fill up the tank now.” said Schaffer.

He said that gas only cost him about $60 before.

As of May 28, the national average gas price for regular grade gas was $2.97. That is more than last year when regular grade gas averaged only $2.37, according to AAA.

“Gas has inflated.” said local driver Steve Bradford.

The average regular grade price in Yuma is $3.02.

The price is leaving drivers like Bradford to look for less expensive gas stations around town, like Arco. Arco is only charging $2.95 per gallon, according to gasbuddy.com.

“Its convenient and the least expensive.” said Bradford.

Lowest gas prices around the desert southwest:

Yuma-area: Arco $2.95

El Centro: NEX Autoport $3.35

Calexico: 5 Brothers Fuel Stop $3.43
