City of Calexico dedicates new park in memory of former police officer
Today the city of Calexico honored an officer who died in a tragic car crash more than a decade ago. They did this by building a park in his memory and bringing smiles to the faces of young children.
It was a joyous moment for the city of Calexico. But even a happier one for the family of Adrian Cordova. A former marine and Calexico Police officer who lost his life in a tragic car accident. Today’s a day his family will always remember.
“The fact that they made this park and named it after him, is very special to me. I’m very thankful because I know the park would’ve meant a lot to him. He would’ve been very happy. And it’s just nice of the city to recognize him and to have another place for kids to come and enjoy something else to do. And come outside and play,” said Adrienne Taylor, Adrian Cordova’s niece.
Cordova loved helping others. They city couldn’t think of a better person to dedicate the park to.
The mayor of Calexico, Maritza Hurtado said, “we wanted to honor him here in Calexico. And honor the family. His mother Luli was our city clerk for a long time here in the city of Calexico. So she’s very well loved in the city as well so, it was only natural to provide the family with that type of recognition, to the loss of their son.”
Thanks to a grant and funds from the local community, the city was able to improve playground equipment. Making it safer for children.
David Dale, City Manager of Calexico said, “the people spoke they wanted to see something here. So we went forward and did what they asked. And I think that it’s really important that we provide parks for the kids here.”
Jesus Cordova, Adrian’s father, hopes this can be a tradition the city continues for other police officers who’ve lost their lives. “I hope that this event can be repeated with the names of other officers that have served the community in the same way.”
The Adrian Cordova park will be an all-inclusive park, where children with disabilities can also enjoy themselves.
