Local car show promotes education

A local car show is more than just about cars – it’s about education.

The Holtville Car Club wants high school students to look at all career options possible.

Club President Roberto Padilla said, “If we can help them out a little bit at least, hopefully they’ll understand that they can go to school and try to get an education.”

They held their 5 th Annual Car Show on Saturday at Holtville’s park to raise scholarship money for that reason.

“We give six $250 dollar scholarships to seniors to help them a little bit with college expenses,” Padilla said.

They use cars as a means to talk about school with young people.

“A lot of times they say, oh, wow, I wish I could have a car like this. Well, if you don’t go to school, it’s going to be pretty hard; it takes a lot of money to fix up these cars,” Padilla said.

They talk with students about the many options open to them.

“Going to school doesn’t necessarily mean going to the university for four years. That’s great if they can do that. But there are a lot of two-year careers, trade schools, technical schools and those offer real good jobs,” Padilla said.

To the Holtville Car Club cars and education go hand in hand.

“We grew up here in Holtville. We went to school here in Holtville, graduated from high school here in Holtville, so, that’s our way of giving back a little bit to our schools that gave us our education,” Padilla said.
