Neighbors took matters into their own hands when they saw a senior being robbed.

Calexico police said neighbors jumped into action on Thursday afternoon when they saw someone allegedly trying to break into a senior’s home

Police Officer Manuel Ceja said, “A neighbor along with his nephew was pulling into his drive-way. They gave pursuit to the suspect who jumped on his bicycle through the neighborhood.”

The neighbors chased 26 year-old Antonio Sandoval and cornered him at Cole Road and Andrade.

“Other neighbors that were nearby saw the pursuit and the suspect fleeing and they pursued him as well. Upon my arrival, I saw several individuals detaining a sole individual on the ground, who was all wet along with being muddy,” Ceja said.

The victim identified the suspect.

“This gentleman is a bit elderly, and was unable to confront nor pursue the suspect. Who gave me in detail that this known individual who was detained climbed his outer perimeter fence, gained entry into the side of his residence,” Ceja said.

Ceja said many burglaries happen when people are at work.

“Our majority of our thefts or burglaries that occur, occur during the day,” Ceja said.

Sandoval is being charged with theft and attempted burglary. He faces up to 5 years in jail if convicted.

Police encourage the community to call 911 if they see any suspicious activity, and to keep at a safe distance if they see a crime in progress.
