Fire Hydrant Artwork

In tonight’s ‘Making a Difference,’ we hear from a service group in San Luis bringing a little bit of color to the community. The idea, have kids paint fire hydrants all over San Luis. The project created by ‘Comite de bien estar’ was meant to recognize and encourage artistic talent among are youth. The project has taken off and what started with one hydrant, has now become 12 pieces of artwork around the city. The theme of the hydrants span from Mexican candy to bubblegum to even the minion characters. Community engagement coordinator, Martina Lopez explains why this project is one of kind.

“I don’t think there’s anybody in Yuma county that has done this type of art and the students that did it are very proud of the work they did. We are also receiving calls for more kids to see if they can start the project again and do some more art on the hydrants,” said Lopez.

the hydrant art was apart of the centers community building project that took place last October. They hope that with the public’s help, projects like this one will spread to neighboring cities like Yuma and Somerton so it’s quite possible you may see some pops of color along our sidewalks quite soon.
