South African variant detected in Mexicali

Health officials said this makes the fifth variant of the coronavirus in Baja California

MEXICALI, B.C. (KYMA, KECY) - Health officials said they had detected its first South African COVID-19 variant.

La Voz de la Frontera reported a Mexicali resident was diagnosed with the variant and had not recently traveled. Alonso Óscar Pérez Rico, Secretary of Health in Baja California, said there are five variants in Baja California. He adds residents should continue to be careful and continue using a face mask and follow social distancing.

Pérez Rico said, "If you already had Covid it does not mean that they will not give you these antigenic variants."
