Bipartisan bill introduced to reform US Postal Service
(KYMA, KECY/ CNN) - A group of Senators introduced bipartisan legislation to reform the struggling US Postal Service on Wednesday.
The Postal Service Reform Act of 2021 would cut the requirement for the Post Office to pre-fund its pension for retirees. That financial burden has been a massive drain on the agency's budget for years.
The bill would also integrate retirees' health care with Medicare.
Lawmakers say those two reforms would save the Postal Service more than $45 billion over the next ten years, while still requiring USPS to continue delivering at least six days a week.
The agency has been asking Congress for financial help for some time and has floated the idea of even stopping Saturday deliveries as a cost saving measure.
