Three-vehicle collision reported on Main Street and Carlisle Avenue

The Somerton Cocopah Fire Department responded to a three-vehicle accident on Main Street and Carlisle Avenue in Somerton at 4:04 p.m. Monday afternoon.

Somerton Cocopah Fire personnel found three vehicles had been involved in a rear end type collision.

According to a bystander, four vehicles were headed westbound when an unknown vehicle came to an abrupt stop for a pedestrian at the intersection of Carlisle Avenue and Main Street.

A red sports utility vehicle, with a driver and one passenger, was behind this vehicle and managed to stop without hitting it. A gray pickup truck, with the driver as its sole occupant, wasn’t able to break in time and struck the rear of the red SUV causing very minimal damage.

The fourth vehicle, a black sports utility vehicle, braked hard but was traveling with sufficient speed to cause significant damage to the rear of the gray pickup truck. The black SUV’s sole occupant was the driver.

The driver of the first vehicle that stopped for the pedestrian left the scene prior to the arrival of the Somerton Police and Fire Departments.

The driver and passenger of the red SUV stated that they did not have any injuries and declined treatment or transportation to the hospital. The driver of the grey pickup truck stated that he had pain in his neck and upper back. Somerton Cocopah Fire Department Paramedics placed him in cervical spine immobilization as a precaution and he was transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center by a San Luis Fire Department Ambulance. The driver of the black SUV stated that she had neck pain but did not want to be transported to YRMC.

The Somerton Police Department is investigating the accident at this time.
