Third COVID-19 wave expected after Mother’s Day in Baja California

BAJA CALIFORNIA (KYMA, KECY) - Mexican health officials say the third wave of COVID-19 cases is expected after Mother's Day.

La Voz de La Frontera reported COVID cases and hospitalizations remain on an upward curve. Therefore, health officials say a new outbreak is near.

They add that people between the ages of 50 and 59 will begin to get vaccinated against the virus. The Secretary of Health, Alonso Óscar Pérez Rico, says Mexicali residents will soon begin the process in the next few days.

Officials will administer the vaccine to residents in Rosarito, Ensenada, and San Quintín. However, Pérez Rico adds the vaccine is not recommended for those who recently received a blood transfusion or have COVID-19 symptoms.

Pérez Rico tells La Voz the highest spikes of infections in Baja California during 2020 were associated with holidays when the population ignored the protocols for having meetings. "I would ask them to give away health and not go around transmitting the disease."
