Snakes become more active during cool temps

During late September and early October temperatures begin to cool down. Snakes also become more active because they are cold blooded animals. When the weather is cold outside they’ll go underground and when it’s too hot outside they’ll go underground.

The most common types of snakes in Yuma are the western diamond backs and the sidewinders. The M ojave rattle snake is the most dangerous snake because it has two toxins one in which it can mess with your central nervous system. But the Mojave rattle snake is rarely seen.

Chris Bedinger, public information officer for the Arizona Game and Fish Department , says most people accidently get bit because they step on snakes for not paying attention to where there walking.

Snakes won’t bite you unless you poke them. A few other ways to avoid getting bit is to pay attention to the ground, shady areas, and in between rocks.

If you do happen to come across a snake and get bit, Bedinger says it’s important to immediately call 9-11 and get to your nearest hospital. The only thing that can counter rattlesnake venom is anti-venom and that’s only available in hospitals.
