Water and cooling sites during hot temperatures

The heat in the desert southwest continues to rise this week. The highest temperatures the week saw was up to 114 degrees.

The National Weather Service issued an excessive heat warning in Southeast of California which includes Yuma, Imperial County, and Blythe. They recommend finding public spaces to cool off during the hot weather.

The Yuma County Sheriff’s office tweeted a map on Twitter that shows all the water and cooling sites available in Yuma.

Staying cool and shaded isn’t a problem for some but for others it’s a daily struggle.

The Crossroads Mission Shelter in Yuma is open to the homeless during excessive heat temperatures for 24 hours a day.

Executive Director At Crossroads Mission, Myra Garlit helps run the shelter and wants the public to stay safe, “In this kind of weather we want help anyone that we can cuz it’s really easy to get dehydrated and run into some problems, health problems.”

A few other tips to avoid during high heat warnings is to steer away from caffeinated drinks, sugar and alcohol as well. It also helps to wear light colored clothing if you’re outside.
