Yuma High School announces new coaches and advisors

Yuma High School is welcoming new additions to their coaching staff as well as several new advisers in roles on campus.

Nabila Gaines will be the school’s girls basketball and volleyball coach. Curt Weber, the school’s longtime football coach, will also coach the boy’s basketball team. Elizabeth Huyck, entering her 29th year at Yuma High, will head the cross country team. Sarah Harlan will serve as student council advisor. Phillip Williams will be the head cheer coach, while Hilary Geer will serve as assistant cheer coach.

“I couldn’t be more excited about the coaches and leaders we have in place for our programs at Yuma High,” Assistant Principal for athletics and activities Steve Anderson said. “There is definitely a bright future ahead.”

Gaines, who was named the girl’s basketball coach two weeks ago, was approved to also serve as the school’s volleyball coach during Wednesday night’s Yuma Union High School District Governing Board meeting.

Gaines has coached basketball and volleyball for three years previously. She spent her elementary and junior high years in the Yuma area before moving the Calipatria, Calif. for high school. A graduate of Western Connecticut University, Gaines has worked as a domestic violence counselor prior to joining the Yuma High staff.

Weber is entering his fourth decade with YUHSD and has been Yuma High’s head football coach for 12 seasons from 1992-1998 and again from 2013 to the present. The past two seasons he served as a volunteer assistant for the boy’s basketball program and was selected as the new head coach in July.

Huyck has coached multiple sports at Yuma High throughout her tenure as a Physical Education teacher. She was the softball coach for 16 years, head girl’s basketball coach for four years, and head girl’s golf coach for eight years. This year, alongside Ralph Farr, who was with the program last year as well, she will take on coaching the cross country team.

Harlan is in her second year at Yuma High and first as the student council advisor. She teaches English.

Williams is a graduate of Hawaii Pacific University where he received his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. He attended and cheered at both Woodard Jr. High and Yuma Catholic High School. He started cheering at the age of six with Pop W arner and also with All-Stars. He has won many state and national titles, including a first place, win at the AIA State Championship in Partner Stunt. Phillip has more than five years of coaching experience with both high school and All-Stars.

Geer obtained her Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing at Northwestern State University of Louisiana and is currently a Labor and Delivery nurse at YRMC. She has 15 years of cheer experience, cheering at Castle Dome, Yuma High School, Gila Ridge High School, and Bossier Parish Community College, as well as All-Stars.
