Assistance League of Yuma: ‘It takes a village’

Local nonprofit hit hard during pandemic and is in desperate need of the public's help

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The Assistance League of Yuma is one link in a long chain who's purpose is to help improve the lives of those around them. Made up of a volunteer force the nonprofit provides scholarships to students seeking higher education, food assistance, healthcare and literacy programs.

But, what they're most know for is Operation School Bell. The program provides inpoverished children with new clothes.

Across the country more than 22,000 volunteers work together to help those in need. So, each year more than 300,000 children receive aid.

We posed a question to the current president of the Assistance League of Yuma Julie Crede, we asked "Why?" To which her answer was simple "to see the children smile."

Unfortunately, like thousands, upon thousands of nonprofits the Assistance League met the same fate. The pandemic released a tidal wave of fear. See, the Assistance League generates funds through their thrifts stores.

So, the fear of contracting the deadly virus kept people from donating, kept customers from buying and kept volunteers away.

The need however has not gone away, it continued to grow and your help is needed. On Saturday April 24, 2021, from 8 a.m. until noon, the Assistance League is holding a mega-sale. Items will be on display at the Operation School Bell parking lot and the thrift store will also be open.
