Man arrested after smuggling meth in gas tank

A man was arrested after being suspected of smuggling methamphetamine at the Highway 86 immigration checkpoint Friday morning.

The 48-year-old man drove up the checkpoint in a white 2006 Ford Ranger around 9 a.m. The car caused suspicion after alerting the Border Patrol canine detection team.

At secondary inspection, El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents examined and discovered 12 packages hidden inside the truck’s gas tank. Agents say the drugs could have been sold for more than $134, 496 in the street.

The man, with both the car and drugs, were handed to the Drug Enforcement Administration for further investigation.
