Local officials respond to Senator McCain’s health

The news of Senator John McCain diagnosed with brain cancer hits home with local officials.

We caught up with Mayor Douglas Nicholls, who says he’s known McCain since 2009.

“It was a bit of shock. I know he hadn’t been doing well lately, but I wasn’t expecting that kind of news.”

Nicholls has worked with McCain in the past on projects that impact the city of Yuma. McCain and Nicholls work together for our military, reservations, and agriculture projects.

“He comes down here a couple times a year, but mainly focusing on military operations, as well as the heritage area, he’s been a huge supporter of all the work that’s been done in our heritage area within the last 15 years.”

Both sides of the political aisle are now wishing the best for Senator McCain.

Nicholls says, “Whatever your political opinion or his actions or opinions, no one wants to see someone get cancer. Especially an aggressive kind of cancer, especially to someone who has given so much to his country. I wish the Senator strength as they go through this process and continue to keep him and his wife in his prayers as we go along this process.”
