Detours start Tuesday for Calexico drivers

Drivers in Calexico can expect minimal delays and detours starting Tuesday Morning.

State Route 98 will begin phase three of the widening project which will shut down the highway in both directions.

News 11 spoke to Caltrans officials to find out how long we can expect these delays.

“The project is going into a new stage of work. The current closure on state route 98 from VV Williams Avenue to Cesar Chavez Boulevard in Calexico is now going to be extended through the Cesar Chavez Boulevard state route 98 intersection,” said Cathyryne Bruce-Johnson, Media Relations Officer for Caltrans District 11.

The closure will begin at 5 a.m. and it will affect both directions of traffic. These detours are expected to be in place for up to four months.

Drivers on Eastbound 98 will be detoured to Kloke Road South, to Grant Street East, then to Imperial Avenue State Route 111 North.

Drivers on Westbound 98 will be detoured to Ollie Avenue South, to McKinley Street East, to Harold Avenue South, to Grant Street West, then to Kloke Road North.

“Most every construction project can be inconvenient to motorist but there will be a lot of benefits to motorist once the project is complete,” added Bruce-Johnson.
With this project, there will be improved traffic flow including a new traffic signal at Cesar Chavez Boulevard and new sidewalks to be installed.

Caltrans also want to remind drivers to be work zone alert and to watch your speed limit.

“It really important for drivers to be attentive whenever they are driving. Pay attention to the roadway be careful of our highway workers out there. Another good point for motorists driving in the construction zone is to pay attention to the speed limit sign which are often reduced,” said Bruce-Johnson.
