Amberly’s Place is a staple within the Yuma community and while their big ‘week in paradise event’ is just days away, it’s important to know exactly what the organization does and why it is so important to help. Amberly’s Place is a family advocacy non-profit organization that was created in Yuma almost 20 years ago. It’s a center that provides immediate crisis intervention for victims of abuse, whether that be mental or physical. There are 18 different crisis centers across the state of Arizona with Amberly’s place being one of the largest. For a small area like Yuma, the fact that this center is getting so much state wide attention is impressive. Trevor Umphress, the marketing and fundraising coordinator of the center explains how victims of abuse often think and what message the center hopes to provide. “People have this mentality, where if you have been victimized, it’s your fault, you dress inappropriately, you did the wrong thing, you spoke wrong, that you caused this among yourself, but you didn’t choose to be a victim, it just happened, yet you can choose to be a survivor and we want to get that message out there that this does take place in our community,” said Umphress.
