Topic of the Day: Cinco De Mayo

13 On Your Side wants to know your thoughts:

Cinco De Mayo, although the day is set aside as a remembrance of the Battle of Puebla, the holiday is more of an American tradition rather than a Mexican one. The battle which has been depicted in history as a perfect example of underestimating your opponent is recognized my Mexico, but not considered a national holiday.

In 1862, the French army landed in Mexico; after taking over the City of Veracruz the French sent six thousand men to Puebla. The French at the time were considered to be the world’s most elite army. The French had the latest in modern weaponry and their long range rifles were far superior than the muskets used by Mexican soldiers.

On May fifth the French attacked Puebla where two thousand Mexican troops had created a stronghold. After a day’s worth of fighting the French retreated after heavy losses; Napoleon III received word of the loss and sent thirty thousands more troops, ensuring a victory.
