Southwest baseball defeats Imperial

Two middle of the pack Imperial Valley League baseball programs each are looking to finish their respective season’s strong.

The Imperial Tigers are coming off a heartbreaking loss at Calexico earlier in the week, after stringing together a four-game winning streak; hoping to start another streak of that length to close out regular season play.

Meanwhile, the Southwest Eagles are just coming out of a murder’s row of games, as they took three consecutive losses to league powers Holtville, Calexico and Brawley.

This rematch game between the two programs would give a chance to either one of them to make their cases for a strong season finish.

It was the Eagles that started this one strong, as they knocked around Imperial starting pitcher Chris Lopez early, getting six runs in the 1st and 2nd innings.

Among the Southwest bats that erupted early, three of the runs batted in were from Derek Guzman, Israel Zermeno and Junior Romero; giving the Eagles the 6-1 lead going into the 3rd.

Even though the Tigers shaved into that lead in the top of that inning, thanks in part to an RBI single by Diego Favila; the Eagles offense proved to be too much on this night.

Southwest would come away with the 14-6 win, and get the season series sweep of Imperial.
