YFD believes local fires were intentionally set

The Yuma Fire Department is investigating three fires they believe were intentionally set.

YFD said Monday at about 3 am, a large fire was reported to be endangering a home in the 2800 block of West 31st Place. Arriving personnel found a pile of trash and two bushes burning next to an Arizona Public Service transformer at 2824 West 31st Place. A parked vehicle was also endangered by this fire. As Firefighters began to extinguish the first fire, a trash can was seen burning alongside a house across the street. Firefighters immediately began to fight the second fire and quickly extinguished that one too.

Another YFD engine in the area found a third fire, this time a bush, burning farther down the block. This fire was also quickly extinguished. Damage was limited to the APS transformer, the trash can, and minor damage to a vehicle. Personnel from both the Fire and Police departments determined the fires to have been intentionally set. These fires remain under investigation.

You can help your police and fire departments, and help protect your homes and families, when you report suspicious circumstances and persons. Be aware of people hanging around alleys and vacant buildings (or acting like they are trying to hide from view), or in business areas after hours (especially late at night).

Reporting this type of suspicious activity to the police immediately can prevent crimes and even save lives. If you have information about arson crimes, contact the fire department, police department, or information can also be provided anonymously through the Silent Witness tip line at 78-CRIME (782-7463).
