Crash sends two people to the hospital

Two people were taken to the hospital with major injuries after they were pinned inside their vehicle following a crash in Winterhaven, Calif.

According to the California Highway Patrol on Wednesday at approximately 3:08 p.m., John Martin was driving his 2015 Honda Odyssey on I-8 eastbound, west of SR-186. Officers said Martin came to a stop due to traffic ahead of him stopping.

A tractor trailer combination vehicle being driven by Alma Hernandez was approaching the Honda on I-8 eastbound from the rear. The tractor trailer combination vehicle failed to stop and collided with the rear of the Honda.

Officers said the force of this impact pushed the Honda into the rear of a second tractor trailer combination being driven by Everado Zamora. The impact was so great that it pushed the second tractor trailer combination vehicle into a third tractor trailer combination vehicle being driven by Raul Zamora. As a result of the collision, the Honda was crushed between the first two tractor trailer combination vehicles. Martin and his right front passenger Norean Martin were pinned inside the Honda. The victims were extricated from the Honda by Imperial County Fire personnel.

They were later taken to Yuma Regional Medical Center for medical treatment. The collision is still under investigation and alcohol impairment is not suspected to be a factor.
