El Centro celebrates 71st Christmas parade

El Centro Chamber of Commerce and Los Vigilantes held its 71st Christmas parade on Saturday.

Darletta D. Willis, El Centro Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, said this year’s theme gave room for creativity.

“This year’s theme was really unique. Cruising down candy cane lane. So it gave everybody a lot of room for creativity with what their interpretation of it was,” Willis said.

Over 100 entries included marching bands, school dance and drill teams, and of course colorful Christmas-themed floats.

“We had about a hundred and twentyish. So, really good,” Willis said.

Willis said the floats show diversity in this year’s parade.

“We’re reaching out to more groups, not just the businesses, and we love that,” Willis said.

Organizers said over five thousand people attended this year’s parade. People lined up since early in the morning all along Main and Eight Street eager to get a good view of the parade and to celebrate the holiday spirit.

“Christmas means family, being together, and, also good food and floats!” El Centro resident Salma Astorga said.

Willis said the Christmas parade with its holiday spirit and goodwill unites the whole city.

“Merry Christmas to everyone!” Willis said.
