Playworks enforces anti-bullying in local schools

A nationwide program that works against bullying is now having a positive impact on schools.

Playworks is a program that was invited into Yuma County schools by the Regional Center for Border Health (RCBH). As a part of anti-bullying campaigns across the country, the program teaches kids leadership and unity through the power of play.

Amanda Aguirre, CEO & President of RCBH, believes the program is having a great impact on schools across Somerton and hopes schools in Yuma will also adopt the program.

Playworks is currently being implemented at elementary schools across Somerton where specific students play the role of a ‘Junior Coach’ in which they help facilitate positive behavior during recess time, including conflict resolution and fair play among their peers.

Junior coach, Hennessie Gutierrez, a fifth grader at Desert Sonora Elementary School says, “My favorite part about being a junior coach is me helping other kids play fair and helping everyone be included.”

Stephenie Figueroa, also a fifth grade junior coach says, “It has made a big difference for me because little kids look up to me as a leader.”

Daniel Duarte, a fourth grader at Desert Sonora Elementary is also a junior coach, he says, “When they talk back or don’t listen, we play rock, paper, scissors, or tell an adult.”

The program helps kids with life and social skills, playing a huge role in communication between them and their peers.

Program manager for Playworks, Alex Sachs says, “We teach them that you’re not out. You’re not a loser, good job, nice try. So everyone says good job nice try and they recycle back into line, there’s high fives being given.”

Statistics within the program show schools that implement Playworks during recess have 43 percent less bullying, with 20 percent of students feeling safer during school hours.
