AG Industry: Most dangerous and crucial job in the business

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KSWT, KECY) - One of the largest billion-dollar industries is right here in Yuma County.

Agriculture plays a huge role in the community.

Robert Hanafi, a long-time pilot in the area has a passion for flying. He says fate brought him to protect the fields of the multi-billion-dollar Ag industry.

Several farmers consider his position the most dangerous, but Robert has a different philosophy.

“I don’t believe that’s the case. I believe it’s very safe, can be very safe, it’s very unforgiving," said Hanafi.

However, Hanafi admits the job has its challenges, as there is no time for mechanical failures or recklessness.

“You cover that in a matter of seconds or two, so you really need to do your homework before going up," said Hanafi.

Operating at night is just another challenge pilots have to face due to the depth of visibility, their perception being about 300 ft away.

“Because we work at night and fly at night, they don’t do this almost anywhere else in the country," said Hanafi.

Robert tells News 11 that every night holds a different experience, but knowing he's serving the greater good of Yuma County's number one industry makes him proud to fly in the night sky.

“The product directly to your dinner table this afternoon, no packaging exactly how you see it in the field," said Hanafi.

Local farmers call this the most dangerous position in the business, and yet, it's one of the most important.
