Calexico police and firefighters deliver gifts to kids in need

EL CENTRO, Calif. (KYMA,KECY) - The Calexico Police Department and Calexico Fire Department celebrated the 17th Annual Kids N' Badges Calexico Unites.

They brought holiday cheer to 42 kids in need. Each child received two tote bags full of gifts and a board game.

"We didn't think we would be doing this, we just had a COVID outbreak in the force, but we're glad we can be doing this," said Calexico Police Chief Gonzalo Gerardo.

Chief Gonzalo says it’s important for kids who grow up in unsafe neighborhoods to see law enforcement do positive things.

“It serves two purposes, number one for the community it shows them we do care for them other than having to respond to these calls, number two it gives us a chance to give back and number 3 my officer really like doing this it’s something we want to do,” added Chief Gerardo.

The Calexico Fire Chief says amid all the chaos of the pandemic everyone needs a little joy right now.

“COVID right now during this pandemic has a lot of us tired and there’s a bunch of uncertainty when this comes around it gives us some joy that a lot of us need and obviously these kids need some normalcy to go back to the way things kind of were,”said Diego Favila, Fire Chief of Calexico Fire Department.
