YCSO says Yuma woman killed in head-on collision

UPDATE: 3:30 PM

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - New details now on the deadly crash that closed U.S. Highway 95 for much of the morning.

The Yuma County Sheriff's Office (YCSO) says it happened just after 6:30 Friday morning in the 9500 block of S. Fortuna Road. That's where Fortuna meets the highway.

YCSO says a Nissan pickup was driving northbound on Fortuna when it veered across the centerline and hit a Chrysler sedan head-on.

Paramedics took the driver of the pickup to Yuma Regional Medical Center (YRMC) with non-critical injuries. The driver of the Chrysler, 36-year-old Rosa Covarrubias of Yuma, did not survive. Emergency Medical Technicians pronounced her dead at the scene.

YCSO says it does not appear alcohol was a factor in the crash, but they're still investigating. Deputies urge anyone with information on this case to call 928-783-4427 or 78-CRIME to remain anonymous. You can also submit an an anonymous tip on the YCSO website.

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - U.S. Highway 95 has reopened following a head-on crash that left one person dead.

The accident happened just before nine at mile marker 34. The Yuma County Sheriff's Office (YCSO) says the accident killed one driver and sent a second to the hospital.

UPDATE: 10:30 A.M.

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The Yuma County Sheriff's Office (YCSO) now tells News 11 one person died in a crash that shutdown U.S. Highway 95 in both directions.

YCSO says one car crossed the center media and hit another car head-on. Deputies say one driver died at the scene. Paramedics took a second to Yuma Regional Medical Center (YRMC). No word yet on that person's condition.

As of 10:30 a.m. MST, Highway 95 remains closed in both directions at mile marker 34. S. Fortuna Road is closed at 24th Street.

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) says U.S. 95 is closed in both directions at Fortuna Road.

ADOT says a traffic accident forced it to shut down the highway.

At this time, we have no information on the number of vehicles involved, or the condition of the drivers.

The Yuma County Sheriff's Office (YCSO) is at the scene. Deputies have Fortuna closed to traffic at 24th Street.

As of now, there is no estimated reopening time.
