Pregnant mom went into labor on freeway during snowstorm

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KYMA, KSWT, KECY/NBC News) - Newly-released video shows the lengths a New Mexico State Trooper took to get a pregnant mother to the hospital in time to deliver her baby.

It happened during a Thanksgiving day snowstorm outside Albuquerque.

The mother-to-be went into labor on the highway during a traffic nightmare. Blizzard-like conditions had caused multiple crashes, and miles of backups.

The closest hospital was 70-miles away. The closest ambulance was 50-miles away, and the car she was in wasn't going anywhere.

That's when New Mexico State Police officer Bryan Waller shifted into high gear. He loaded the expectant mother and her partner into his cruiser, and took off.

"I'm literally driving from one side to the other on slush and ice." said Waller.

The video shows a wild ride that sometimes took them along the highway's shoulder, and sent them into the median at other times. At one point, Waller's fellow officers shut down several lanes so he could make better time.

Waller says he could relate to what the mother-to-be was going through.

“I am a relatively new father. I do have an 18 month old, my first child so I could kind of relate, not exactly what she was going through, but I can understand that relationship with the child."

Eventually mother, father and police officer met up with an ambulance. It whisked the woman to the hospital where she gave birth to a healthy baby girl.
