Acting Homeland Security chief to step down

Acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan is stepping down.

The news came in the form of a tweet from President Donald Trump. In the tweet Trump wrote: ” Kevin McAleenan has done an outstanding job as Acting Secretary of Homeland Security. We have worked well together with Border Crossings being way down. Kevin now, after many years in Government, wants to spend more time with his family and go to the private sector… ”

McAleenan then tweeted his thanks to Trump for ” the opportunity to serve alongside the men and women of the Department of Homeland Security. ”

McAleenan is the President’s fourth homeland security secretary. He took over in April after Trump fired Kirstjen Nielsen.

Trump says he will name a new acting secretary next week. It’s still unclear who’s on the short list for the position.
