AG News: Local grower taking green to new levels

YUMA, Ariz ( KYMA , KSWT ). Although Yuma County is referred to the winter lettuce capitol of the world, it also has another industry which is very profitable worldwide.

The date industry nets profits in the billions. Yuma County along with its neighbor Imperial County date trees are more like gold mines. Dates are shipped all over the world; this means tons in packaging, which ends up in landfills.

In a news release Natural Delights announced the company is taking a proactive approach when dealing with its impact on waste. They’re launching new packaging that will be made of a 100% post-consumer recycled plastic for its dates. David Baxter, Brand Manager for Natural Delights predicts the move will keep 800 tons of plastic out of landfills and oceans and will also help decrease the company’s carbon footprint.

In a release Baxter said ” We continue to invest in packaging sustainability in order to do what is best for our business, consumers, and the environment, ” The new packaging will hit shelves this month.
